Admissions

Students wishing to receive a Ph.D. in Human Development apply directly to the Department of Comparative Human Development. Students are eligible for admission if they have received a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree or have completed an undergraduate program equivalent to such a degree. Admission depends upon strength in the general undergraduate record, scores on the Graduate Record Examination, letters of recommendation, personal statement and interests, and relevant research experiences.

Applications should be filed with the Office of the Dean of Students on or before December 15 to be considered for the following autumn. Please refer to  the Social Sciences Division's Application Requirements for a complete list of required materials.

Foreign students must provide evidence of English proficiency by submitting scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

The application form for admission into the Department of Comparative Human Development's PhD program is also used to determine financial aid, which is distributed on the basis of merit. Research and teaching assistantships are available and are normally held by advanced graduate students.

In keeping with its long-standing traditions and policies, The University of Chicago, in admissions, employment, and access to programs, considers students on the basis of individual merit and without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, or other factors irrelevant to participation in the programs of the University. The Affirmative Action Officer (773-702-5671) is the university official responsible for coordinating its adherence to this policy and the related federal and state laws and regulations (including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and The Americans with Disabilities Act).
